Sat-Sun 5/4-5 - Big Boy 4014 Steam Locomotive leaves Cheyenne
The Big Boy is a 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive in railroad speak. Largest steam engine ever built. It will be traveling under its own power on May 4-5 and it will be an opportunity to take pictures of this monster under steam.
Schedule is https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm
Note the April stuff is for a different engine. Big Boy’s number is 4014 or 4004, not 844 I expect a large crowd all along the tracks with the Wyoming HP very active. I will be going up in a week to scout the route from Cheyanne to Laramie to Medicine Bow and will report back on my findings. Tentatively I will be leaving on May 4 about 10AM from the Harmony Transportation center, for a place along US 287 and will picnic to save a spot. Be prepared to site for hours. Once the train goes by the plan is to race ahead to take more picture, but the crowds my end that plan. The track is along 287 between Laramie and Medicine Bow. If the train is on schedule it will leave Laramie at1:15 PM and arrive in Medicine Box at 2:30. That is about as far as I intend to go.

Since I’m not a railroad buff I would appreciate you sending me any current information you might unearth so I can share. Note that the dates are different on several web sites so I will be calling to find out that the May dates are true. - Ken Eis

Sat 5/31 @8am - May Macro Photoshoot
Day and Date: Friday, May 31, 2019 @8am FRCC parking lot SW corner
Leader: Paul Marcoux
Location: Long’s Gardens, 3240 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80304 Location for car pooling: Meet at 8:00 am in the Front Range Community College parking lot, southwest corner. Please let me know if you will be joining us so that no one is left behind. Long's Gardens opens at 9:00 am. Directions: For those who want to drive to Long’s Gardens directly, take either Highway 287 or I-25 to Colorado 119 (Diagonal Highway). At the intersection of CO 119 and 28th street in Boulder continue straight ahead on to Iris Street. Stay on Iris until reaching its T-intersection with Broadway (CO 7). Turn left on to Broadway. The entrance to the gardens is on the left about 0.15 miles from Iris Street. Photography Opportunities: Long’s Gardens has been owned by one family for over 100 years. They grow four varieties of Iris: Tall, Intermediate, Dwarf and Super Dwarf. The tall variety blooms late in the season and super dwarf blooms early in the season. The Iris season ends about the 9th of June. In addition to the Iris the large Poppies may be in bloom. These flowers are less than two feet tall. The farm has a small herd of goats as well as a lama. One can get quite close to these animals. Antique farm equipment (trucks, tractor, etc.) is in various locations on the farm. There are a couple of old buildings. Equipment: Macro lens or other close up lens. Tripods are allowed. Flash and extension tubes may be useful for flower photography. Wide angle to medium telephoto lens for the animals and farm equipment. If you find an Iris plant that you would like to own, they are available for purchase. The helpful staff will teach you how to dig up and package the plant. I hope you will join me for this macro photoshoot. -Paul
[May Macro shoot update] The location is Long's Gardens in Boulder. The Long's Gardens website provides frequent updates on the status of the Iris. This is today's post: "The iris seem to have weathered the recent weather with minimal damage. The snow was wet, and most damage was done by the breaking of some stems. Because of the recent cool weather, the Tall Bearded iris are not yet open. It looks like at least a week before there is any significant TB bloom. Updated on May 22, 2019" The May webpage on our club website has a copy of my original announcement on the May Macro photoshoot, which remain unchanged except for the day and date. I look forward to seeing you on May 31st. Smiles, Paul

Sat 5/25 @6:00am - May Wildlife shoot at City Park
The May outing will be Saturday the 25th, going down to City Park in Denver to photograph the rookery. At this time of year there are nesting Cormorants, Black-crowned Night Herons and Snowy Egrets. Occasionally there are also Cattle Egrets. A really long lens is not necessarily needed as subjects can be fairly close, especially when they land in the overhead trees looking for dead branches to build their nests. Lots of opportunities for in flight shots. Harsh sun starts to wash out the Herons and Egrets by mid-morning so getting there early really helps with the lighting. It is about an hour drive to get there. For carpooling, lets meet at the usual spot, the north east corner of the Harmony Transportation Ctr parking lot off Harmony near I-25. We will leave at 6:00 a.m. As usual, let me know if you are planning on coming as we do not want anyone left at the parking area. - Guy

Sun 5/26 @1pm - Conceptual SIG meeting at Kai's house, plan for wedding/guns/7 deadly sins shoot
Hey all! So the next meeting of the Conceptual SIG will be at my house at 1 pm on the 26th of May. I hope to have at least 1 of our models at the meeting. If you haven't already checked it out, the wonderful Jill made a Google Doc for the info for this project at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hzRnGlKQhek2gYcI6Xvqn_PqVuPjtJUjMpDtogp0diI/edit?ts=5cc630fd If you don't have edit permissions when you log in, please let us know. If you edit something, please initial it on the document. Albert said that he was going to try to make a cool prop - but won't be able to make our next planning meeting. I am going to work on getting some silk flower bouquets as well. I received confirmation of the June 30th date for the use of the wedding venue property on Hwy 34 towards Estes Park (still close to Loveland) I will get the address and photos in the next week or 2. I know Syriena is one of our models. And I believe that her mom, Michelle, will be as well. I have asked Syriena's boyfriend, Luke, to come dressed to the 9's as well. I am in the process of finding a few more models to help us out with this project. I know I have probably missed something, but I will shoot another email if/when I remember lol See most of you on the 26th! - Kai

Sat 5/27 @2pm & @7pm - The Wizard of Oz
The Contemporary Dance Academy is performing "The Wizard of Oz" and they have offered 3 seats per show to volunteer photographers. We can't use flash, and we must use a "silent shutter" mode so that we don't disturb the audience. Please contact Mike Barry if you are interested. I will offer one of the seats to the first 3 members who contact me, and I will create a wait list in case someone cancels. -Mike
